Peter Shaw Reviews BramsRun Sauv 09 and BramsRun Pinot Noir 08

BramsRun is a new brand to me. It has its origins in a high country farm situated well up Spray Rd in the Waihopai Valley, in the Marlborough region. In fact it is so far up the road that as yet there is no electricity up there.

About six years ago Mark Bramwell bought the run of about 450 hectares with the intention of planting at least some of it in vines.

Bramwell still intends planting some pinot noir and syrah but in the meantime he is buying grapes from three contracted vineyards to turn into wine.

Bramwell is a frequent visitor to the run that he describes as a bit of a wildlife reserve where we have red deer, fallow deer, pigs, goats and a whole lot of wild fowl that make it a great place to holiday.

It wont be much of a holiday once the planting starts.

The wines are made in marlborough and there are two in the range that come from different areas in the province.

Both are produced and bottled by InVino NZ, Spray Rd, Waihopai Valley.

BramsRun Marlborough 2009 Sauvignon Blanc. This wine has pale colour with just a hint of green. The nose is open with gooseberry and passionfruit aromas.

The palate is soft and fruity with a soft nettle mouthfeel. There is a hint of sweetness but the finish is crisp and clean. RRP$20.

BramsRun Marlborough 2008 Pinot Noir has thin colour but the aromas are complex and inviting. The palate is full of plums and cherries and a little spice too. Its good value at RRP$24.
